The 5 apps that are constantly open while working on my MacBook

I tend to do most of my work on a Macbook Pro where I try to keep my digital workspace as clean and as minimal as possible to allow me to focus on what I’m doing.

That typically means that any app which isn’t being used is shut down to save on desktop space and memory.

However, there are some apps that I just can’t do without. Regardless of the work that I’m doing, five apps are always running. So I just wanted to take a few minutes to call out the following tools, which form the backbone of my working day.

In alphabetical order, those apps are:

Alfred

The best way of describing Alfred is a launcher application which, over the last year, I have found to hugely increase my productivity. Through a single keyboard shortcut (Option + Spacebar for me), I can launch applications, search for files (both locally and remote), perform calculations and manage my web browsing — all without my fingers ever leaving the keyboard.

Hitting Option + Spacebar and then a command has become second nature for me now. It must save me hours a month as I no longer…
